The cultural landscape of the fertile Stari Grad field on the island of Hvar, in almost unchanged use since the time of Greek colonization, represents the best-preserved Greek system of agricultural land division in the Mediterranean. Greeks from the island of Pharos colonised the Adriatic island of Hvar in 384 BC and on it founded a settlement – Pharos which still exists today as Stari Grad. On the adjacent vast field, the ancient division of agricultural land into 75 plots (so called hora) is still preserved to this day.
