Klis

Located on a steep cliff between the mountains of Kozjak and Mosor, Klis fortress offers the stunning panoramic view of Diocletian’s city of Split and the surrounding islands. Records of the fortress date back to the 5th century and it has an impressive historical story. Erected in an exceptional strategic position, it was of the utmost military importance as “the guardian of the Dalmatian towns”

The historical military unit “Kliški uskoci”, which persistently defended the fortress against the onslaughts of the occupiers, left a lasting mark on Croatian history. Their combativeness and fearlessness was best shown in the fight against the Ottomans, from whom they successfully defended the fort for two decades. A legendary hero Petar Kružić, the commander of “Uskoci” had a fundamental role in the defense of the fortress. In the village of Brštanovo, near Klis, you will come across a wonderful attraction in the heart of nature – the Rajčica wells. Ten ancient wells built in the form of circular dry walls were once of great importance for the local population who drew water from them for their families and livestock. The legend has it that the wells never ran dry. There is little information about this phenomenon, but in some records they are also called “Roman wells”, which means that they have been there for centuries
