The old Illyrians used to live here. They raised livestock on the Brač plateau, mainly sheep and goats. They dug watering holes for cattle in the compact stone and built stone mounds that you will still find today when exploring the beautiful nature of the island’s hinterland. Stone mounds were their houses and their temples
Over the centuries, numerous churches and palaces in Dalmatia and Italy, and later in other parts of the world, were built from Pučišća stone. The Parliament and the New Palace in Vienna as well as part of the Parliament in Budapest were built from it, and a lot of evidence indicates that the White House in Washington was also partly built from it. The same stone was used to build the glorious Šibenik Cathedral of St. James, one of the most significant and beautiful achievements of Renaissance architecture in Dalmatia.
