World famous stone and the stonemasonry school
For this town, stone is both the bread and the cross. Since ancient times, the strong hands of stonemasons have embraced it and listened to its song. The stone here speaks and pleads. The stone comforts and soothes. The stone rings. And wherever you turn, you will find stone. There are stone thresholds, stairs, roads, houses, and roofs. The graves are also made of stone. Stone and its processing have been considered art in Pučišća for centuries. There is a stonemasonry school in town with more than a hundred-year-old tradition, placing it among the best organized and longest-standing professional institutions in the whole world
Towers and fortresses
The oldest and still fully preserved tower is Ciprijan Žuvetić. It was built in 1467 and following its construction around ten similar fortifications begun rising, ranking this place among the most “fortified” towns in the world in regard to size and number of inhabitants. The turbulent past of Pučišća gave it its nickname – Luka kula (Tower harbour). Namely, in the 15th century the coastal zone was not a safe area, so residential buildings were built as fortresses. Today, the fortresses of Ciprijan Žuvetić, Akvil and Dešković family have been preserved, and as architectural units hold the status of extreme interest.
Mediterranean ambient
Meditation on the beach next to the crystal-clear sea with a view of the ships sailing into the harbour, an evening walk with the sounds of Dalmatian music or a night swim on the beach with the view of the town lights sinking into a summer’s dream. All of the above you can experience in this picturesque island town

Number of towers in Pučišća

13

The towers in Pučišća are buildings carved from the famous Brač stone giving the bay a romantic Mediterranean outlook. The construction of Pučišća began after 1420., just after the termination of continuous conflicts and pirate attacks at sea. Soon the town is threatened by the attacks from Turks, heading from the mainland where they have already conquered the shores. Hence, the people of Pučišća started to build defensive towers and castles
