The Paprenjak (Black Pepper Cookie) –a medieval sweet made with honey that even today can be tasted when you are on the island of Hvar. It was named after the pepper that in Renaissance times denoted a group of spices. Thanks to natural preservatives, this pepper cookie is a sweet that lasts for a long time so the island women traditionally baked it for their sailor husbands and sons for their long voyages. Pepper cookies are made in a variety of forms, each is hand-painted and represents a small work of art. Today, the Stari Grad pepper cookie in Stari Grad is only prepared according to original recipes and is listed as part of the Republic of Croatia’s protected cultural assets.
