The Church of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj in Sinj, a notable Croatian Marian shrine built from 1699 to 1712, has retained its original appearance to this day. On the central part of the church is a picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy who, according to legend, helped the people of Sinj on August 14, 1715 to defeat the by far superior Ottoman army. On it is a golden crown with a cross which, as a sign of gratitude to Our Lady, was forged by the officers who took part in that battle. Every year, on the Feast of the Assumption which is also the Day of the town of Sinj, tens of thousands of believers from all over the world come in pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sinj.
