Festival of drystone wall
In the towns of Velo Grablje and Hvar on the island of Hvar from March 13th to 17th, 2024, the first Drystone wall Days will be held.
As part of the event, expert lectures, excursions, a workshop on decorating drywall and drywall terraces for children and adults will take place, as well as the opening of the photo exhibition “Naša gomila” in the Arsenal gallery in Hvar.
One of the motives for hosting this event is an archival recording from 1944. which shows traditional drystone wall construction in town of Velo Grablje. Although they are a part of traditional Dalmatian construction, drystone walls are slowly disappearing today, therefore the aim of this event is to preserve the autochthonous way of construction that has been practiced in this area since ancient times.
On another note, the ethno – eco village of Velo Grablje is one of the best – preserved examples of drystone wall construction, and for several years now various associations and activists have been ongoing to protect the drystone wall construction as UNESCO-‘s intangible heritage.
