In 1981 it was declared a nature park. It divides Dalmatia into the coastal part and the hinterland – Dalmatian Zagora. The highest peak of Biokovo is called St. Jure (1762m). Diverse vegetation of 2274 plant species with numerous endemics grow on its slopes. Today, Biokovo is also home to many protected and very rare animal species
