What makes Split so special? Scenic Cruises UK compiled a list of the 20 best dopamine destinations in the world, and Split took the top spot, ahead of many global metropolises.

Dalmatia is located along the coast of the warm and clear Adriatic Sea, stretching from Zadar to Dubrovnik, with Split being the main Dalmatian city and the second-largest in Croatia. It’s a city of contrasts, Mediterranean vibrance, and southern hustle. It’s both small and large, urban and historic, gentle and rugged, with a thriving university network, and also a major tourist destination. Despite this, life here moves slowly, without rush or stress. Locals often affectionately call it the “most beautiful city in the world,” which is of course subjective, but even many visitors who have no emotional ties to it agree that Split is definitely one of the most beautiful cities globally.

Recently, Split received another recognition. A study conducted by the travel organization Scenic Cruises UK revealed that Split is the best city in the world for boosting mood, or in other words, the best dopamine destination. What makes Split so special? Scenic Cruises UK compiled a list of the 20 best dopamine destinations globally, with criteria believed to influence dopamine release, such as the amount of sunlight, local cuisine, well-maintained promenades, air quality, and green spaces.
Sunshine
Split is truly the epitome of a sunny, warm Mediterranean city. With 2,631 hours of sunshine annually, it’s a destination that thrives outdoors 365 days a year. Locals are often cheerful, bright, and relaxed, spending most of their time outside, strolling along the waterfront promenade, enjoying the beaches, or sitting on café terraces. Even in the middle of winter, you might come across a group of locals playing the popular game picigin – still in swimsuits.

Besides the summer and spring, winters in Split are also sunny and pleasant, with minimal cloudy and rainy days. During this time, the city truly “comes to life,” with temperatures reaching up to 20°C. Locals take advantage of this period for recreation and outdoor sports activities. On weekends, locals make the most of every free moment, enjoying cycling, rollerblading, running, or simply relaxing by the sea. A weekend in Split will be a true source of vitamin D, and the sense of relaxation you’ll experience will make you forget your troubles, even if just for a moment.

Local Cuisine
In Dalmatia, food has never been just about nourishment. Here, food sparks conversation, singing, and bonding, making the Dalmatian table not just a place to eat, but also a space for connection and togetherness. This is no surprise, as Dalmatia is located in the heart of the Mediterranean, where life is relaxed and every bite is savored. Dalmatian cuisine is one of the healthiest in the world, based on a light Mediterranean diet, where essential ingredients include olive oil and aromatic herbs.

The abundant sunlight, combined with fertile soil, has resulted in world-class wines from this region, such as Plavac Mali and Pošip. Every dish is rich in seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs specific to the southern European climate. It’s also worth noting that the Mediterranean diet of the Croatian islands of Hvar and Brač was added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. In Split, particularly in the old town, you’ll find charming family-owned taverns where dishes are still prepared using traditional recipes. Be sure to try the seafood, fish, pašticada, cod, or cuttlefish with broad beans.
Step Count / Hiking Trails
Split is an ideal city for pedestrians. The most beautiful promenade is undoubtedly the coastal walkway that runs along the entire Split shoreline, from the eastern part of the city, Žnjan, all the way to the city center – Riva, and then continues along the coast to the western part of the city, at the foot of Marjan Hill.

This promenade is nearly 10 kilometers long and offers a stunning view of the open sea, especially magical at sunset. Split also boasts many other tree-lined walkways, making everyday errands a true pleasure. If you want to learn more about the city’s cultural heritage and history, there are various cultural walking routes available for exploration with a guide.
Air quality
One of the key factors that make Split an ideal city for improving mood is the exceptionally high air quality. The sea air and water are rich in minerals and salts, which have a positive effect on the respiratory system and overall health. There is also Marjan Hill, which locals often refer to as the “lungs of the city,” further contributing to the clean environment.

Additionally, Split has no heavy industry or manufacturing plants, which means that air pollution emissions are minimal, making the city even more pleasant for daily life and outdoor walks. This clean air has a positive impact on both the body and the mind, helping to reduce stress and improve mood.
Green Spaces
When it comes to green spaces, Split can boast Marjan Forest Park, which covers 79 square kilometers. At the top of Telegrin (178 meters), you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea.

This natural oasis in the city center allows residents to enjoy clean air year-round, surrounded by greenery, with well-maintained bike and jogging paths, as well as outdoor exercise areas. At the foot of the hill, there are beautiful secluded coves, perfect for those who prefer to avoid crowded city beaches.
