Davor Rastuhar
Davor Rostuhar was born in Zagreb in 1982. Since 2001, he has worked as an independent writer and photographer, and since 2008 he has held the status of an independent artist with the Croatian Association of Artists (HZSU). He has worked as a journalist and photographer for numerous magazines, including National Geographic Croatia, Meridijani, and Geo. Since 2013, he has focused more on his own long-term projects carried out within the Club for Expeditionism and Culture, which he co-founded and currently presides over.
Croatia from Above (2007–2014): The largest photographic project in Croatia, during which he documented the country from an aerial perspective for seven years in cooperation with National Geographic. The photomonograph National Geographic – Croatia from Above became the best-selling photomonograph in Croatia, and its namesake exhibition was seen by over 2 million people across 20 countries within three years.
Polar Dream (2015–2018): This project follows his preparations and execution of the first Croatian expedition to the South Pole. He became the 26th person in history to independently trek from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole—solo, unassisted, unsupported. His book Polar Dream was the best-selling book in Croatia in 2018, and during the following year, he gave 176 motivational lectures attended live by over 50,000 people.
Love Around the World (2018–2021): Together with his wife Anđela, he spent a year traveling around the world exploring the theme of love in different cultures. They visited 24 countries on all continents and conducted 108 interviews with people from diverse backgrounds. Their conversations covered love, relationships, marriage, challenges, infidelity, and divorce, involving a wide spectrum of people—from nomadic hunters and gatherers to Hollywood celebrities. The project resulted in a unique documentary film, book, and photography exhibition.
Hunters and Gatherers (2023): Among all the tribes he has visited, he was most fascinated by hunter-gatherers because they live the oldest lifestyle that humans have followed for 99% of our evolution. He returned to one of the most intriguing hunter-gatherer tribes ten years after his first visit to deeply observe their culture, life, changes, and his own reasons for fascination with such cultures. In addition to the book, photo and video records, and lectures presenting this project to the public, this time he also created a VR film, and to showcase it, a VR cinema was built in the center of Zagreb.
o date, Rostuhar has traveled to over 120 countries and led more than 20 expeditions to some of the most remote parts of the planet. He has published nine books, four of which have been translated into English, and one each into Serbian and German. He is also the author of two documentary films and one VR film.
