Božidar Vukičević

Božidar Vukičević was born on 23 December 1966 where he graduated from Secondary Art School – orientation: photography. The first photographs were published in 1984 in the youth newspaper “Omladinska iskra”. Since 1987 he has been working as a photojournalist in Slobodna Dalmacija, the most widely circulated daily newspaper in the former Yugoslavia and today’s Croatia.

At the beginning of the war in Croatia, he photographed war events: from Eastern Slavonia, Posavina, Banija, Western Slavonia, through the Dalmatian battlefields – Zadar, Šibenik, the battlefield in Zagora, to the south of Croatia, as well as the “Operation Storm”, which ended the period of war reporting. In parallel with war events in Croatia, it also covers war events in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina. During those war years, he began cooperating with the photo agency “Associated Press”, thanks to which he published a series of notable photographs in various foreign media.

Since 2006, he has been working as a photo editor and photojournalist in the magazine “Otvoreno more” where he mainly deals with underwater photography, themes and reports with a marine theme. In 2012, he started working for the CROPIX photo agency. The fact that artistic photography, which he likes to do, is not the same as newspaper photography, has never been a hindrance. Božidar Vukičević combined his two hobbies into one profession like no one else in Croatia. For more than thirty years, he has been recording equally successfully on land and under the sea.

He is a member of the SPLIT Photo Club and the Croatian Press Photographers Association of the Croatian Journalists’ Association. He has been a member of ULUPUH since 2010. He organized a number of solo and participated in many group exhibitions. His works were published in numerous photo monographs. His photo “One Hundred Years” is in the permanent exhibition of the Split Art Gallery museum.
