The Biokovo–Imotski Lakes UNESCO Geopark is a place of incredible beauty. In addition to the Biokovo Nature Park, it also encompasses the stunning surroundings of Imotski. Let’s explore it!
National parks, nature parks, strict nature reserves, geoparks… Protected areas can be found all across Croatia, each one beautiful and unique. The youngest among them is the UNESCO Biokovo–Imotska Lakes Geopark, which was officially designated in 2024.

In addition to the Red and Blue Lakes, Imotski is surrounded by seven more lakes
We were completely captivated by the beauty of this region — and by facts we hadn’t known before! Did you know that, in addition to the Red and Blue Lakes, the area around Imotski is home to seven more permanent lakes and several seasonal ones? This means the town is often surrounded by more than ten lakes! The closest to the town is the Blue Lake, nestled right below the gorge overlooked by the Topana fortress, while the Red Lake, perhaps the most famous of them all, is the deepest in Croatia and a true geomorphological marvel.

These two lakes are true gems of the Dalmatian Hinterland and places everyone should experience at least once. But if you want to see more and enjoy something truly special, exploring all the lakes around Imotski seems like the perfect day trip, one you’ll remember for a long time.

Lokvičić Lakes
After soaking in the beauty of the Red and Blue Lakes, let your next stop be the picturesque Lokvičić Lakes. This name refers to three karst lakes – Galipovac, Mamića Lake, and Knezovića Lake, all connected by underground water streams and rarely ever drying up. The most famous and largest of them is Galipovac, located at the northernmost point of the Imotski Field and surrounded by strikingly steep cliffs.

Prološko Lake
Nearby, to the west of the Imotski Field, lies Prološko Lake. Prološko Blato is a marshy, flood-prone area that fills with water during the winter and spring. In the warmer months, the water recedes and the area dries up, except for one part of the Blato: Prološko Lake.

At the Vrljika spring, two lakes appear, perfectly shaped like eyes
A truly special sight awaits at the source of the Vrljika River. There, you’ll find the Two Eyes Lakes: two small, circular lakes about forty meters in diameter that never dry up and serve as one of the river’s sources. While they are beautiful from the ground, the view from above is particularly magical, the lakes look like eyes framed by “eyelashes” of grass and trees.

Green Lake
The color palette of Imotski’s lakes is further enriched by Green Lake, located in the northwest of the Imotski region in the village of Ričice. While tourists from around the world marvel at the Red and Blue Lakes, Green Lake remains a sweet local secret, a favorite spot for picnics, walks, and enjoying the tranquility of nature. In addition to these nine named lakes, the Imotski area is dotted with several other sinkholes that fill with water occasionally. What a kingdom of water and beauty!

Biokovo–Imotski Lakes UNESCO Geopark: Croatia’s Youngest Geopark
Even just a glimpse of the lakes around Imotski, their colors and the surrounding karst landscape, reveals that this is truly a special place. It’s no wonder UNESCO recognized it, declaring this area, together with Biokovo Mountain , Croatia’s third geopark. Only Papuk and the Vis Archipelago share this prestigious status in the country.
