Stari Grad Plain
The base of its architecture was set 24 centuries ago by the Greek colonists, and it is divided into rectangular plots bounded by dry stone walls. The field is crossed by many roads both lengthwise and crosswise. The plot of Stari Grad Plain represents one of the masterpieces of Greek culture and the best-preserved cadastral division in the Mediterranean. The Plain is included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. Today, vines, olives, lavender, carob, almonds, and figs are grown here
Summer residence of Petar Hektorović
The fortified summer residence of the poet, author of the first realistic epic poem of the Croatian Renaissance “Fishing and Fishermen’s Complaints”, is the most famous building and one of the symbols of Stari Grad. The Renaissance poet, Christian thinker and builder constructed this fortress over a long period of time and with attention to detail, it was as important to him as his capital literary work. By building a summer residence, Hektorović brought to life his idea of creating a microcosm – a small, closed world where all God’s creatures – fish, birds, plants, and people – have a place to live
Škor Square
Of all the small squares that Stari Grad abounds in, the most picturesque is Škor square. This square was created during the 17th and 18th centuries and it was once home to the shipyard after which the square is named (Its name is a derivative from a Croatian word for shipyard – škver). This curved space, surrounded by characteristic Dalmatian workers’ houses with picturesque luminaries (skylights), sulars and stairs (stone terraces and stairs) is the home of mythical Dalmatia
