Dalmatia – the homeland of Zinfandel

When Grgich’s Chardonnay wine won the prize in Paris in 1976, everything changed. French wines lost their primacy, and American wines introduced something new and fresh to the wine map of the world. Grgich was acknowledged by the Smithsonian Museum as one of the hundred most famous Americans and Zinfandel has become one of the most successful American red wines. But this created a mystery which for decades teased wine lovers: where did Zinfandel originate from? Only a few years ago DNA research showed that Zinfandel is actually Crljenak, an almost extinct variety of wine from Dalmatia. Come visit Dalmatia, the homeland of Zinfandel! Visit the vineyards and wineries of Kaštele for a historic meeting with Crljenak. Then make a visit to the winery on the island of Hvar to taste the wines of indigenous varieties such as Bogdanuša and Prč, and Plavac Mali, the closest relative of Zinfandel.
