Veliki Kaštel was built during the Cretan War (1645-1669), a Venetian-Ottoman war fought in the Aegean Sea and Adriatic. Besides Veliki Kaštel, the area around the village of Kotišina also features a botanical garden of the same name, created by the Franciscan friar and scientist Jure Radić (1920-1990)
The garden is famous for its wild-growing plants and species from other regions that have found their home here. Near the Botanical Garden and Kaštel, there lies the Romanesque-Gothic Church of St. Martin dating back to the 14th-15th century, which offers a view of the town of Makarska and the nearby islands of Brač and Hvar.
