Once upon a time, the charming Adriatic town located at the mouth of the Cetina River was the city of pirates who ruled the coast from Split to Dubrovnik, and to whom other sailors had to pay tribute in order to have free passage. Today, the people of Omiš are proud hosts who selflessly share the fairy-tale environment of this attractive coast with their guests, the mountains that protect it and the river canyon that disappears into it. Over tens of thousands of years, the river Cetina has shaped a canyon along which unreal and fascinating scenes open up, a scenography in which green, blue and white backdrops alternate. The high strait carved between the mountains of Mosor and the Omiš Dinara certainly leave no one indifferent. And while green reveals the beauty of vegetation, blue depicts the sea, the river and the sky in all its available shades with the strong white outlines of the virtuous rocks carved into the limestone.
The canyon was protected as a natural landscape in 1963, and its beauty can be observed from some of the viewpoints, the medieval forts that once lined up along the 100 kilometre-long river course. On the eastern side of the river, we can find a village that was inhabited in the 15th century with the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary built in 1897 on the small Brus plateau. The village was called Vinišće because of the abundance of grapevines, but due to some incorrect writing, S. Vinišće became Svinišće. This is where the kayaking and rafting tours that descend towards the estuary begin, and we can see them off with a view and continue on our Cetina trail, intoxicated with adrenaline.
