Dugi Rat is a village situated between Split and on the Adriatic Highway. The oldest villages surrounding Dugi Rat are on a higher level above the sea, at the foot of Mount Perun (Mosor southern spur). Today these villages have been abandoned as for years the inhabitants have moved towards the coast. The town has become particularly notable over the past thirty years, thanks to the greater development of tourism. Regarding the age of those villages situated on the foot of the mountain, archaeological finds in the Turska peć and Ponistrice caves, which are evidence of the existence of life in that area since the Stone Age. Settlements of a permanent population can be confirmed by the castles and accumulation of stones from the late Bronze and Iron Age.
