Procession “Za Križem” (Following the Cross)

The first records about the island of Hvar's traditional religious belif were mentioned for the first time in the records of bishop Milani in 1658.
He recorded that this procession began much earlier and was held on Good Friday. Today, the "Za Križem" Procession starts on Maundy Thursday at 10pm, during Whitsun and lasts until the early hours. The length of the procession trail is about 22 km. Six parishes take part in the procession: Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj and Vrboska. At the head of the procession, a cross-bearer, who is usually barefoot, bears a cross of some 18 kg, covered with a transparent, black veil. His adjutants and companions (feral bearers – feralisti) wear white fraternity' tunics. Numerous believers from all around the island participate in the procession.
