Zaostrog is from times immemorial a inhabited place about which testimonies the archaeological findings like relief of the God Mitra. Byzantine emperor Konstantin Porfirogenet wrote about the fortification Ostrog, situated highly below the Viter mount after which Zaostrog later got its name. During the years, Zaostrog became the tourist place due to its geographic location, clean sea and beautiful beaches. Over the place dominates an old Franciscan monastery within which there is a museum, ethnological collection and library. Beside tourism, inhabitants are also occupied by agriculture and fishing. Zaostrog is a preserved, littoral area, almost untouched area, and being like that offers a quiet holiday far away from the luxurious and burdening modern life.
