St. Nicholas - Komiža

St. Nicholas

According to an ancient habit, Komiža inhabitants together with the participants of the St. Nicholas solo regatta, celebrate the holiday of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and travellers which in Komiža is celebrated as a Day of the Town. On the hill in front of the parish church of St. Nicholas, a ceremonial fire is burned for the rescue of all ships and sailors around the world. This is a centuries old habit and a hundred wooden boats which had been sailed by Komiža inhabitants since ancient times are burned within the fire representing life.
