Vrgorac - Archeological sites

Published in Culture and sights

Today there are more than sixteen archeological sites in Kozica, near Vrgorac. They hold the ancient traces of the burials in the area, of which the oldest date back to 1900 B.C., whilst the newest sites date back to the late medieval period.Gomile (accumulated stones, from the Illyrian period) and stećci (headstones) are spread over the region and are evidence of the ancient inhabitants who were cattle breeders and warriors. In Kotezi an Archeological park from the 14th and 15th century was set up, and in the village of Kokorići research is still being carried out. In Prapatnice, in the Vukojevići hamlet a necropolis of around 30 headstones (stećci) has been found, and is a unique historical site and one of the largest in Dalmatia.
