The Stari Grad Culture Centre

Published in Culture and sights

The Stari Grad Culture Centre is a cultural institution within which operates the Municipal Library (founded in 1992 and situated in the historical building of Čitovnica (Reading Room) – a Croatian house; the library holdings have some 10,000 books).
In the Biankini palace, headquarters of the Centre, is the "Juraj Plančić" Gallery (founded in 1963 which preserves the works of Stari Grad painter Juraj Plančić and other important Stari Grad and Croatian artists from the second half of the 20th century.). There is a permanent exhibition "Faros – ancient Stari Grad" (archaeological findings which are the result of many years of protective archaeological research); the Memorial Captain's Room (with items from the 19th century from the period of Stari Grad's seafaring prosperity) and the Permanent "Antique Shipwreck" Exhibition (with remnants of the cargo from a Roman galleon dating back to the 3rd century). The Centre for the Culture is also very active in publishing activities (Bašćina Book Collection). The centre also takes care of Stari Grad's monumental heritage.
