Rogač - The Rogač

Published in Culture and sights

Rogač owes its name to the carob tree, a flowering evergreen shrub or tree of the pea family, that is native to the Mediterranean region, and which nowadays has also spread to South America. This long, green leguminous plant, when harvested becomes dark brown and has a very specific taste. Carobs are also known as St. John's bread, because according to tradition St. John the Baptist subsisted on them in the wilderness. The Carob tree is also mentioned in both the New Testament and in Talmud.
