Omiš - Mirabela fortress

Published in Culture and sights

The Mirabela fortress rises up above the town to a height of 245 m. Built in the 13th century, it was, for a long time, reliable protection against the Omiš pirates when they were hiding in the secure Cetina Canyon in case of great danger.
During the Ottoman attacks in 1537, the defenders of Omiš confused the invaders by yelling and firing and with help of the canyon echo the invaders so much that they thought that Omiš was protected by a much larger group of defenders. There is a footpath to Mirabela from Šubići Street, passing near to the small church of St.Spirit and you can arrive at the peak in just 15 minutes.
