Maslinica - Marchi castle

Published in Culture and sights

Marchi castle is the trademark of Maslinica.
The village originated in the 18th century thanks to Venetian noblemen - the three Marchi brothers who obtained permission, from the Venetian government to build a castle with a village around it. In the beginning the castle was supposed to serve as a military fortress.
However, due to the fact that the family lacked a male descendant, the line was continued through the female descendant, their sister, Domenica Marchi, followed by her daughter Vincenza and her husband, Ivan Martinis, originally from the island of Bol. In order to inherit, it was necessary that one bore the Martinis-Marchi surname.
The castle was in decay for many years, and only in 2001 did serious renovation take place, restoring it to its former grandeur. It also became an important point in Croatia's gastronomic map.
