Kaštel Štafilić - Castle Rotondo

Published in Culture and sights

The Fortress or castle Rotondo was built in 1508, as ordered by Trogir's landed property owner, Stjepan Štafileo, on a sea cliff. The residential part of the castle was situated in the southern part where the port for leaving castle in boats was also located. The origin of the surname and the family's coat-of-arms's come from the word raceme - Greek staphile. Around the castle a village was established of rectangular form, surrounded by a trench. Along the city walls, the Ferra family built a castle which today is owned by the Pera family. The castle was connected to the continent by a movable bridge.
