Kaštel Štafilić - Bijaći

Bijaći is situated at the foot of the hill, a historical village that was extremely important from ancient to the Medieval times. On the antique foundations an early Christian basilica was built whilst in the 9th century the church of St. Marta – a three-nave building with a square apse and foundations of the bell-tower on its façade. It is surrounded by the remains of other buildings and there is also an Old Croatian cemetery here from the Late Antique period.
From the early medieval period, from the 9th century to the end of the 11th century, Bijaći was one of the main capitals of the country of Croatian. During archaeological research, stone furniture of Old Croatian architecture was found, adorned with wattle-work plastic. Findings are stored in the Museum of Croatian archaeological monuments in Split (the great ciborium) and in the Kaštela Town Museum.
