MEET THE FAMOUS SINJSKA ALKA… ON SKIS!

It is one of the most famous events in the Central Dalmatian calendar, and certainly one of the proudest – Sinjska Alka, the last knights’ tournament in Europe, and an event which has taken place each year in Sinj for over 300 years to commemorate the heroic repelling of the Ottomans at the 1715 Siege of Sinj.
On the first weekend of August, the Alkar knights of Sinj gallop on horseback with their jousts in an attempt to lance the metal Alka ring hanging in the air in front of them. It is a fantastic event and was named the top cultural event in Croatia back in 2012.
But that is in August, and we are now in January, so what are those brave Alkari up to?
A rather unusual Alka tournament took place this month, as no less than 17 Alkar knights took place in the first-ever Alka to take place in the snow, with the famous Sinj horses replaced by skis.
The event took place in the ski resort of Kupres in neighbouring Bosnia and Hercegovina. Check out the action in the video below – a great event and a reminder that there are less than 7 months to go before this year’s proper event.
