Croatia has a rich maritime tradition, as well as a thriving boat building industry, but while the majority of the country’s boat building industry awareness is centred on the shipyards of Rijeka, Split and elsewhere, there is a small but thriving sector which supplies international clients all over the globe with some of the finest vessels of their kind, an industry which survives without any state subsidies at all.
The Croatian Small Boat Builders Association has an impressive portfolio, from the red tourist semi-submarines dotting the Croatian coast and further afield to quicker boats made for the Cameroon Coast Guard.
Each year, these hard-working producers gather at Hotel Meridien Lav in Podstrana to present their wares at the Days of Croatian Small Boatbuilding fair. For the last two years, they have been joined by an innovative Tourist Attractions fair, and the combination of the two makes for a fun family day out, with lots to entertain the kids. Entrance is free, and you can see the trailer below for this year’s event, which runs from April 27-30.
