Aromatic Hvar, the sunniest island on the Adriatic, but also perhaps the most fragrant, particularly at this time of year, when the famous lavender crop comes out in bloom.
Fields of lavender are not as plentiful as they used to be, but there is more than enough to celebrate, and nature lovers will once more be heading to the gorgeous inland village of Velo Grablje next weekend, to celebrate the 10th lavender festival.
Velo Grablje, once the capital of lavender production in all Dalmatia, is undergoing something of a revival in recent years. With a permanent population of just five just a few years ago, the village’s fortunes have changed due to the efforts of some young local enthusiasts, who were determined to restore the traditions and heritage of Velo Grablje, of which lavender, and its lavender festival, plays centre stage.
