Known as one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world, Hvar is stunning at any time of year, but there is something special about late June and July.
For this is lavender season, and the time of year when the aromatic lavender bushes are in full bloom. Don’t be surprised to see cars parked randomly by the side of the road, as tourists head into the field to take selfies.
For the last 11 years, the village of Velo Grablje has been the focal point of the lavender harvest. Once the centre of lavender production for all Dalmatia, the village fell on hard times due to emigration and forest fires destroying much of the lavender crop.
Things are much better these days, and the village is undergoing something of a revival. At the heart of everything is the annual lavender festival, where a number of lavender-based activities and recipes come together. Included in the festival is the chance to harvest lavender and take part in the production of the precious lavender oil.
It is a lovely event, and this year it will take place on June 28 and 29. The full proramme is below.
