Vis and Komiža pogača (bread pie)

In the modest homes of fishermen on the island of Vis, easily available foodstuff has been used for centuries so that is how simple dishes like the famous Vis and Komiža pogača have been created. Here we speak about traditional dishes made of leavened dough and stuffing prepared with chopped salted anchovies or sardines, stewed onion, spices and capers as desired. The preparation of this cake is not complete without olive oil which provides it with a special aroma. Vis pogača is served cut into triangles whilst the Komiža people cut their pogača into squares. Unlike Vis pogača, Komiža pogača contains tomatoes.
