The official site of the Tourist Board Split-Dalmatia County

On the southern slopes of Kozjak, from as far back as 1189, is the church of St. Marija od Špiljana, today known as Our Lady of Stomorija. Beside it, plane trees, olives, figs, vines and plants mentioned in the Bible have been growing for centuries and for this reason the Bible Garden was founded here.  In memory of Pope John Paul II’s second visit, nature lovers planted many other types of trees, such as the Judas-tree, laurel, acacia, herbs and spices here. In addition to trees and plants, there are also numerous works of art and sculptures by famous Croatian artists who found inspiration for their work on the Bible in the garden.
