At the heart of today’s Solin lies ancient Salona, once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and the largest archaeological park in Croatia. Regarding the size of Salona, which had a population of 60,000 inhabitants, the imposing ramparts with towers and gates, the forum with temples, an amphitheatre and cemeteries of Salona martyrs all play witness. According to legend, Salona is the birthplace of the Roman emperor Diocletian.
