There is a unique rite of special piety and the expression of the religious and cultural identity of the inhabitants on the island of Hvar from the central part of the island which has continuously been taking place for five centuries. During the night from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday the procession connects 6 island towns, and at the same time (at 10 pm) processions start from six parish churches led by a cross bearer who, in gratitude, as his own or family’s vows, wears a cross weighing up to 18 kilos. He is followed by followers and a multitude of believers and pilgrims.
