The Hvar Theatre opened its doors in 1612 as a space for cultural and social events, equal to all classes. Therefore, in the history of European theatres it has a special place as the first communal and the third Renaissance theatre in Europe. It was built above the Arsenal – a space used for repairing galleys and storing various nautical tools. The exterior of the theatre is mostly preserved in its original form, while the interior dates back to the 19th century.
