At the site of today’s Gardun village, just a few kilometres from the town of Trilj, are the remains of a Roman military camp – Tilurium, a 7th Roman legion’s camp. The Romans set up camp on a plateau above the banks of the river Cetina. Its position was carefully chosen on a strategic hill from where it was possible to control every movement across the river Cetina. On the western side of the camp part of the ramparts are still visible today whilst in Gardun archaeologists have found fragments of luxury ceramic and glass jars, jewellery, the metal parts of military equipment, tools and weapons, Roman money, sculptures and inscriptions.
