Once an important Illyrian centre and the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, todays Salona represents an important archaeological site. Just 6 km away from Split, Salona represents a favourite excursion site for the inhabitants of Split, but also of the many tourists. The remains of the ancient town are very well preserved and are evidence of life from the 2nd century B.C. The old city centre, the walls and the forts, the necropoli, the monumental amphitheatre, the thermal baths and the sanctuaries all represent a picture of a really ancient town and of life before Jesus Christ.
