“On the cross” Procession
Dalmatian Procession “On the cross”

The first writings about this traditional religious devotion on the island of Hvar date back to the writings of bishop Milani in 1658. He wrote that the procession began earlier and was held on Good Friday. Today the “On the cross" procession starts in Holy Week, on the Maundy Thursday at 11 p.m. and lasts until the early hours of the morning. The procession is 22 km long and involves 6 parishes: Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče and Vrbanj and Vrboska. At the head of the procession is a man carrying a cross, who is often barefoot. The cross he holds weighs 20kg and is covered with a black scarf.
