The Stari Grad field (Ager)
Dalmatian nature

The Stari Grad field, the largest and most fertile field on the Adriatic islands, extends some 6 km to the east to Vrboska, while on its southern slopes it is bordered by the picturesque villages of Dol and Vrbanj. This cultural landscape, formed by man over time, has preserved the system of paths and great plots from the period of the Greek town Pharos (4th century B.C.) and is the most well-preserved ancient parcelling system (HORA, AGER) in the world. In July 2008 it was included in the UNESCO world heritage. Greek plot dimensions were 1 x 5 stages (180 x 900 metres) bordered by dry stone walls and pathways and in many places remnants of the ancient out-houses – the so called villa rustica can be found. The best explored villa rustica is the villa Kupinovih below the Dol whilst the most accessible of all Greek guard-houses around the field is that situated on the Maslinovik hill, above the only water spring in the field – Dračevica.
