Diocletian palace was surrounded by sixteen bulwarks

As the Diocletian palace was far away from, in those times, the nearest big town, Salona, it was surrounded by sixteen bulwarks. These bulwarks were strengthened in the 16th century and so around the town a system of fortresses were built – with five stone bastions filled with soil, pits and artillery positions for defending Split.
