Dalmatian city by the sea Kaštel Gomilica

First name of Kaštel Gomilica was Kaštel Opatica as the Split nuns of the Benedictine order built it in the first half of the 16th century on the islet Gomile, after which got today’s name. The King Zvonimir gave a property as a gift to the Benedictine order on which they built a church of St. Cosmos and Damian. Entrance to the castle (Kaštilac) is protected by a height fort which was entered across a wooden bridge. After the population inhabited the inside part of the walls, rest of the villagers started constructing housings around the city walls, on a protected area along the coast.
