Dalmatian city by the sea Kaštel Kambelovac

Kaštel Kambelovac is situated on the sea, between Kaštel Lukšić and Kaštel Gomilica. In 1517, brothers Jerolim and Nikola Cambi built a castle on an islet in order to protect themselves and the inhabitants of Lažana and Kruševik from their enemies, today this castle is called Kambelovac. Kaštel Kambelovac’s form is cylindrical, and of all the castles, it is the only one having this shape. For this reason it was highly appropriate for defence against enemy attacks.
In the beginning it was only situated at sea, but by raising the level of the coast it spread towards the hinterland, toward Kozjak. At its northern part a castle tower is emphasized, with its highest part standing on wall brackets. Close to it is a palace with a renaissance balcony whilstst at its southern part that once was above the sea, a summer residence was annexed. Still today the Cambi family coat of arms with the engraved names of the family members and year of construction – 1589 can be found there.
