The island of Hvar was already known in ancient times as an important strategic and nautical centre whilst today it is considered one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world. an indented coast, clean beaches and plenty of sun as well as untouched nature, fragrances of lavender, olives and wine is a picture of the well-known island of Hvar. Today the island’s name has Greek origins (in Greek Pharos – lighthouse). From this name the Romans formed the name Pharia, Dalmatian Romans then changed it to Fara whilst in the early Middle Ages, it was inhabited by Croats who changed the consonant f with the group of consonants hv thus changing its name into Hvar.
